Crime rate increased instead of decreasing, Gates fail to shield Model Town.
All the inconvenience suffered by the residents since the gating system initiated by Model Town Society last year, turned out to be a sheer waste as the crime rate increased instead of decreasing in the posh locality.
The residents in Model Town are suffering a lot of hardships due to the blockage of most of its entry and exit points during the night, thanks to the management of the residential society for erecting useless gates on all the entrances.
The top administration of the Model Town Society, last year, decided to close down all its entry and exit points except for the four entrances, to provide protection to its residents especially those falling victim to street crimes but the road and house-robberies are alarmingly increasing in the entire locality, police sources confirmed here on Friday.
The Model Town Society erected gates on all its entry and exit points and started closing down 22 out of 27 entrances from 12:am to 6:00 am in a bid to stop road and house buglaries
According to police sources, at least 75 incidents of robberies and dacoities were reported during the first three months in 2006 while this year 93 such incidents have been reported so far (till March 29, 2007) in the Model Town Police Station.
According to the police statistics, last year 40 incidents of armed robberies were reported in Model Town police station while 65 incidents of robberies have been reported in the same locality so far in this year.
Interestingly, the structure of the iron gates paves way to the robbers to escape from the locality along with their bikes though the vehicles including that of the police cannot cross it.
The Model Town Society closed down its 20 out of total 27 entry and exit points after 9:00 pm and only four entrances are opened from midnight to 6:00 am.
It is important to note here that on March 13, this year, dacoits barged into the residence (120/J-Block) of Federal Minister for State Shahnaz Shaikh in Model Town area and escaped after collecting cash, gold ornaments and other valuables worth over Rs 5 million after midnight at the time when most of the gates of the society were closed down.
However, the only change witnessed in this regard, is that the motorists have to suffer a lot during the night due to the blockage of the entry and exit points.
Ironically, the installation of the gates has multiplied the miseries of the policemen, residents and other citizens, as they have to travel longer distances to leave or enter into the posh locality especially in case of an emergency.
“Street crime is the major concern of the residents of Model Town therefore, we are trying to adopt different techniques to stop the incidents like mobile phone and purse-snatching,” Tahir Ali Khan, Vice President of Model Town Society said, when contacted. When asked to give details of the budget involved in the recruitment , training and mandate of the security staff, the Vice President, despite repeated contacts, refused to furnish his answer stating “I am too busy to comment.”
